Biography:

Richard Lithgow was born in Long Island, N.Y. in 1963. His introduction to the arts began at a very young age through his mother, a pianist and writer. Richard’s passion for artistic expression grew rapidly throughout his childhood and by the age of 14, he already had a budding body of work and a start on his future artistic style.

Led by his father’s passion for the outdoors, which included fly-fishing, trout and pike fishing in the picturesque Catskill and Adirondack mountains, Richard was influenced heavily by the natural beauty that surrounded his formative years. This influence is clearly reflected in his stunning wildlife and landscape paintings. However, both of his parents were born and raised in New York City, where Richard spent a lot of his time. This influence is also revealed in his paintings through his satirical take on urban life, the weight of emotional pressure and it’s oppression of the “light” inherent within the human disposition. Heavily influenced by the Dutch Masters, Richard’s work bears the hallmarks of Dutch light and shadow, with deep brown hues and brilliant glimmers of light reflecting off his subjects’ faces.

Richard’s “other-worldly” take on all of his subjectsconjures up feelings of nostalgia and warmth, even in the face of conflict, revealing his deep sensitivity and passion for life. Richard works primarily in oils, using a traditional method of blocking in with an Umber-crimson wash, establishing the structure of the painting by wiping out highlights, and adding darks. Color and detail are gradually added.

His art studies include work at the Art Students League in NYC, Cornell University and formal training with private teachers. However, Richard’s main influence was through mentor Joe Occhupinti, a fellow member of the world renowned Salmagundi Club in Manhattan, where Richard’s work hangs honorably. Richard has won numerous awards throughout the United States for both his wildlife paintings and his human subject matter. He has had several one man shows in Los Angeles and Carmel, California. Richard’s work is represented in Galleries throughout the United States.
