Size Still Matters : Even When Old

One of America’s oldest art clubs shows its largest traditional works from the collection

NEW YORK, West Village, New York (February 6, 2023) – Salmagundi, one of America’s oldest arts organizations, will present Big!: Oversized Works from the Collection, an exhibition showcasing large artworks from the club’s 2,000+ piece collection. The show, open to the public, will take place in the Grand Stair Gallery from January 28th to April 1st, 2023 at Salmagundi’s West Village 47 5th Avenue townhouse in New York.

The exhibition is a celebration of the commanding oversize works of art that have been collected by Salmagundi over its 152 year history. The seven works represent landscape, animal, seascape and still-life paintings tied together by size and tonality.  Visitors will have the opportunity to admire the large paintings created by the club’s iconic past members, including Frank Alfred Bicknell (1866-1943) [HNRA 1907-1943], William Henry Drake (1856-1926) [RA 1887-1926], Henry Mortikar Rosenberg (1858-1947) [RA 1890-1947], Harry Wilson Watrous (1857-1940) [RA 1900-1940], Albert Wasserman (1920-2017) [RA 1973-2010, ERA 2010-2017], George Beline (1887-1971) [RA 1931-1971] and Don Demers [ENRA 2009].

“Salmagundi is a hidden gem.  The public often is unaware that the private art club is open to the public seven days a week from 1pm-6pm (weekdays) and 1pm-5pm (weekends.)  Visitors can view historic and current traditional representational works from more than 800 artist members,” said William “Bill” Eric Indursky, Executive Director and Curator, “This exhibition is a testament to the club’s commitment to representational art and its rich history.”

The exhibition will concurrently be held in the same space as a display of the 150 anniversary sculpture competition presented by Salmagundi library.  Salmagundi Smith library sculpture competition exhibition had more than forty top sculptors from around the world compete to create a bust of a past or living member of the club.  The top ten works are displayed along with the show Big!: Oversized Works from the Collection.  A panel discussion relating to the sculpture show will be presented by the library, Sculpting Our Heros on February 16, 2023.  Tickets are free but limited from the company website.
