Description:

Some of the earliest artist members at the Salmagundi were part of  the American Tonalist movement.  Working within a limited color palette of closely related colors, Tonalists aspired to emulate musicality and inspire contemplation. See choice examples from the permanent collection of the organization.  This small group show displays works by (Robert) Bruce Crane (1857-1937), (Benjamin) Franklin DeHaven (1856-1934), John Francis Murphy (1853-1921), William Crothers Fitler (1857-1915) and others.
