About the Event

Relax and enjoy a few hours communing with flowers! This floral painting class is designed for flower lovers and all art experience levels, who’ll learn to paint various combinations of flowers in floral bouquets designed with the artistry of our local Ariston Florist.

Artist Lois Bender will give a demo in watercolor showing how to compose your painting, select your color palette and learn saturation, texture and brushstroke contrasts. Against background washes, she’ll teach you to envision the whole design, applying brushstrokes to bring flowers to life in gesture and detail. You’ll learn watercolor techniques to enhance your pleasure painting flowers, exploring different styles and moods of expression! Other wet or dry mediums such as pastel, etc. are also welcome.

About the Instructor

Lois Bender has an extensive background in drawing and painting flowers in watercolor. She teaches floral painting in the Hamptons at the Sag Harbor Florist and various other venues such as the Baker House 1650, East Hampton. Lois’ art practice has focused on garden and nature themes starting in 1996 with GardenSpiritsNY, her art and design brand celebrating all things garden. She exhibits her work at various Metro NY venues and in the Hamptons including Sara Nightingale Gallery.

Painting flowers since the age of six, Lois’ love of flowers was inspired by her mother Flora Bloom, a garden lover, and Nana Hortense Bloom! She attended Carnegie-Mellon University, graduating from Hunter College (BA) and Boston University (MFA), studying with Philip Guston. Her primary mediums are Painting and Printmaking. The start of her design career in the gift industry was as an art director in advertising agencies working on the Godiva Chocolates Brand. Combining illustration and design, she created her own art business “TeaQuotes & GardenSpirits,” selling art, stationery and textiles to the retail industry.
