Photo Workshop Group is a group of photographers who are also members of the Salmagundi Club. We meet monthly, to exchange ideas, explore techniques and in many cases, work outside our comfort zone. For most meetings, we bring our cameras to experiment and learn. The topics vary. Sometimes, we work in the clubhouse. Sometimes, we go further afield. This show represents some of the work we’ve done at recent meetings.

A Year of Practical Exploration
- Macro photography: The first meeting introduced close-up technique, equipment, lighting, tripods, and
experimental stations for members to try hands-on work. - Portraits and lighting: The group explored traditional and contemporary portrait approaches, including
indoor and outdoor techniques, flash, soft boxes, available light, and evening street portraits. - Still life and the Club interior: Sessions used the Hartley Gallery and the Club library as photographic
environments, emphasizing exposure, composition, texture, atmosphere, and the challenge of finding a
strong image in a familiar place. - Night photography: Outdoor evening sessions around the Club and neighborhood asked members to
balance fading natural light, artificial light, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, tripod use, and flash. - Printing and presentation: James Senzer of Loupe Digital discussed fine-art printing, mounting, framing,
paper choice, tonal range, color, texture, and practical preparation of work for exhibition or sale. - Field work: A visit to Gleason’s Gym in Dumbo offered the chance to photograph a storied New York
boxing environment, with attention to low light, movement, respect for subjects, and documentary
atmosphere. - Guest artists and evolving tools: Recent meetings have included Thorsten Roth’s jazz and fighter
portraits and Gary J. Murakami’s presentation on the creative path from photography to AI image creation.

About the Salmagundi Photo Workshop Group
The Photo Workshop Group meets monthly, generally on the last Friday of each month, and is open to Salmagundi Club members interested in photography. Its purpose is to encourage conversation, exchange of ideas, hands-on experimentation, and practical learning. Sessions combine short presentations, demonstrations, shared assignments, group discussion, informal critique, and opportunities to photograph together inside the Club and beyond its doors.
The group began with the simple idea that photographers learn best by doing. Members bring their cameras, curiosity, technical questions, and personal ways of seeing. Some meetings are built around a technique, such as macro photography, portrait lighting, flash, still life, or night photography. Others introduce members to working professionals, printers, framing specialists, or artists exploring the changing relationship between photography and new image-making tools, including artificial intelligence.
