Biography:

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer, and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Hudson Valley NY. His primary media is Found Object Art. His artistic endeavors began as a child growing up in Chicago, working in geometric acrylics, with several gallery exhibitions during middle school. Equally right and left brained, he went on to enroll at MIT, studying Mechanical Engineering, and was voted by the faculty as the top engineer in his class. He began at Harvard Medical School while still an undergraduate and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, becoming triple board certified in 4 years.

David began his career as an inventor at an early age, selling the patent rights to his first commercially viable invention to a F500 corporation during middle school, and went on to be awarded numerous patents during high school and college.  He continues his work as an inventor, primarily in medical device innovations, blending his creative and scientific talents.

An avid international traveler, he has visited 133 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 285 UNESCO world heritage sites. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, tools, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.  He exhibits in numerous galleries, including The Old Sculpin Gallery and Featherstone Center for the Arts on Martha’s Vineyard, the Tufts/School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Gallery71 in Rhinebeck NY, The Laffer Gallery in Saratoga Springs, the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, the Kingston Arts Society, The Athens Cultural Center and the Garrison Art Center. He is also represented online by the Saatchi Gallery as well as by the Alessandro Berni Gallery in NYC. His work has been featured in the Thin Air Art & Literary Magazine, as well as The Carnegie Center and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and he was selected as one of the “Featured Artists of Upstate NY” and as an invited artist at the Hamptons International Film Festival art show. He is an Artist Member of The Salmagundi Club in NY, and on the Board of Directors of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association and The Old Sculpin Gallery. He strongly believes in giving back to the community; sales of his donated works have raised over $16,000 for charitable organizations in the past 3 seasons, primarily for the arts, education, animal welfare, and community services.
