Biography:
Ian is a diagnostic neuroradiologist living in Honolulu, Hawaii who has been in practice for over 25 years. A Canadian born and raised in Toronto, he was immersed in a crucible of art, culture, foods and peoples from every corner of the globe. He was exposed early in life to art by his father, who was an avid and passionate oil painter and collector of art and antiques, and this formed the basis of his lifelong fascination with art. Ian also loves music and was a violinist from the age of five, and also enjoys the theatre and cinematic classics. A self-admitted “foodie”, he loves the aesthetic and gustatory pleasures of the culinary arts and also the molecular basis of the culinary sciences. During his internship, Ian was afforded the opportunity to experience the UK medical system at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital; it was an incredible medical and cultural experience, not to mention a great education in the great ales, stouts and whiskies of England, Scotland and Ireland. To say that travel is a passion would be an understatement.
Ian’s medical educational journey and practices have led to many interesting experiences, moving on from Toronto to Santa Monica, California, then Boston, then Manhattan, then Delray Beach, Florida, then Palos Verdes, California and currently in Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition, he has travelled extensively and feels very fortunate to have experienced so many different cultures and foods, visited famous (and not so famous) art galleries, and to have engaged in conversation with so many wonderful people. Ian also shares a passion for architecture, a natural blend of artistic expression and functionality. He has spent many a day in New York (and many other cities) walking the streets in awe and amazement.
In addition, as a footnote, Ian is a cancer survivor, having previously overcome a lymphoma diagnosis. In Toronto, he was involved in peer-support work for other lymphoma patients who were preparing for stem-cell transplantation, a treatment that he himself endured and that cured him. The experience has reinforced the importance of the power of positive energy and spirit, optimism and spirituality in his life, and the importance of wonderful and supportive people in his life. Most importantly, he has a great appreciation of art and music, and it’s integral role in his healing process.
The Salmagundi Club in many ways embodies so much of what Ian loves: a place steeped in history, deeply passionate about the arts, architecturally beautiful, and full of friendly and interesting artistic folks. Also, it’s his full-circle return (albeit periodic) to The City that he loves and has missed ever since he left. He is very grateful and excited to be part of this vibrant Salmagundi community, and looking forward to many great years together celebrating the arts.
