My training as a painter began with Richard Luschek, a still life painter in Cincinnati, Ohio. I studied with him in his studio under the traditional, sight-size method in which he was taught. Richard was trained by Paul Ingbretson at his Boston, Massachusetts atelier and Ingbretson himself was trained by R. H. Ives Gammel, author of Twilight of Painting. Gammel was a student of William McGregor Paxton, a highly acclaimed portrait painter and student of Jean Leon Gerome who taught several artists affiliated with the Salmagundi Club and was a member himself. All of these artists and their influence continue to guide my own work as I strive to implement their techniques, processes, and wisdom through subjects and concepts that are inherently contemporary.
