Statement from the Artist:
The two Sunset Photographs were taken near the same area overlooking the Hudson River and New Jersey. “Sunset 1” was taken in the Winter of 1990, and “Sunset 2” in 2025.It is evident from the first one that it is very out of focus with little detail.
Some reflection is seen on the water but it isn’t clear enough to appreciate. The snow on the pier is also out of focus. Basically poor detail overall, which is a shame, since the colors are fine. There is no detail on the New Jersey buildings, they merely look like blobs of darkness. And what could have been a lovely sunset with more effort just did not work out either. A very unsuccessful photograph.
“Sunset 2” , from 2025, is a late sunset over the river. It not only shows far more detail in the buildings, clouds, and water, but the water reflections add extra vibrance to the overall scene. The clouds and changes in sunset colors may be the “star” of this effort, but I feel that everything is working well together to create movement and excitement. The whites pop out effectively, and pier A on the Manhattan side of the river also adds to “Sunset 2.” I feel that my “jump” to 2025 and beyond proves to be a positive step in my photography work.
