Statement from the Artist:
I had always been attracted to remnants of a past time. The spirit of the life that existed in and around those places is strong. Once shining and vibrant, they call out in later times to perhaps be recognized or at least noticed, so that a memory of it, though its active time has passed, can survive. I feel like I have always heard that call. Both subjects presented here have been demolished.
'The Old Roadhouse' was painted around 2003. The structure was on Route 9W in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Roadhouses like this were common in the area, just a couple of miles up from the George Washington Bridge. Many had Entertainment. Frank Sinatra performed in the area early in his career. This is possibly the first oil piece I did of this kind of subject.
'Greenpoint Ghost' is a cropped view of the old Harte & Company building at the end of Franklin Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This was once a proud industrial area. The U.S.S. Monitor was built and launched a little further down the East River shoreline. This area more recently has been largely replaced by residential high rises. I painted this tribute in 2023. I continue to paint in the format which started with 'The Old Roadhouse.'
