The famed Salmagundi Club on Fifth Avenue proudly presents The Illustrators exhibition in the beautiful Hartley and Moran galleries in its historic 1853 townhouse at 47 Fifth Avenue. The club was started in fact by a group of Illustrators, painters, sculptors and writers back in 1871 and is known today as one of the oldest art organization in America. For the publishing industry of the late 19th century, the process of including illustrations as part of visually supporting the written words required the talents of those who could translate those words into a visual expression. The artist, as an illustrator, not only possessed technical drawing skills and mastery of their medium, but also had a gift of channeling the essence of the written word and expressing it as a strong visual representation.
The exhibition celebrates and pays homage to the illustrators of the past, as well as invites the illustrators in our current membership, and their contributions in publishing, advertising, and beyond to be shown alongside the historical masters. The Salmagundi Club’s earliest members included the top illustrators of their time, and included such renown talents as Howard Pyle, NC Wyeth, and many more. Works by Charles Dana Gibson, James Montgomery Flagg Henry Mayer, Edward Penfield, Howard Chandler Christy will be on view in the exhibition.
This exhibition celebrates Salmagundi’s early illustrators, the illustrators in our current membership, and their contributions in publishing, advertising, and beyond.
The exhibition and sale are free and open to the public. All works will be available for sale to support the artists, and a smaller portion of the proceeds will be used to benefit The Salmagundi Club’s charitable works and educational aims, as a registered 501©3 charity organization. Rare historical works and non-member works will not be available for sale.
The Illustrators exhibition will open as part of a “triptych” of three fine art shows in three separate galleries that will run concurrently at the club starting December 10th, 2024. The shows are the Annual Thumb-box, The Illustrators, and Unique Impressions.
