Fred Brian taught printmaking at a small university. Toward the end of my BFA, he suggested his own graduate school. “Go study with the Master,” he said. There were three great instructors: Gabor Peterdi at Yale, Antonio Frasconi at Purchase and Mauricio Lasansky at the University of Iowa. I went to Iowa.
Lasansky told students, gathered in his expansive printshop, an introductory story. “I begged my father to let me study printmaking. He told me to study with the best.” His father sent him to Stanley William Hayter. There at the worktables were Picasso, Miro, Chagall and Kandinsky.
Mr. Lasansky told us, “I was a little peanut. And now you are my little peanuts. When you teach in your own shops, tell your students about the tradition of printmaking, the continuous community, the craft of Dürer, Goya, Mantagna, and Picasso.”
And I did. I am proud to do so.
